Why do Jews and Poles not get along?
Mike asked:
This might open a huge can of worms, so please don’t anyone get offended or overly-passionate. Just some facts, and maybe personal experiences. Historically, the Poles (especially under King Casimir in the 1300s) allowed entry to the largest number of Jews in Europe and left them their rights and freedoms. Although joked about and sometimes persecuted, they were generally respected and favored by kings for their business savy. They prospered and were in some high positions, even adding to the culture (ex: Bagels were invented in Poland by the Jews, among other things). In the 20th Century, especially a little before, then during, and after WW2, they hated each other. This hatred for the most part lasts until today. What exactly ruined their relationship during that time? I have read and heard a lot on this subject, so I have many facts and personal experiences. But I was curious what others think or know about the sour Polish-Jewish relations recently.
Some interesting answers. I am Polish and have some personal background in all this. My father was taken to Siberia when he was 12 by the Soviets and his parents died there. From what he recalls, his Jewish neighbours said his family were anti-communist and that brought the Soviets to their house, deporting the entire family! Back then, a lot of Soviets in high positions (Trotsky and Lenin to name just two) were Jewish and promised the Jews in Poland better living conditions if they helped them against the Poles. It was one effective way to divide the nationalities living in a very mixed Poland at that time. Germans did the same wth Ukrainians, promising them landspace if they attacked Poles. And as for Poles collaborating, that is only partially true. They were the only country in Europe that didn’t collaborate with Hitler and had an organization called ‘Zegota’ that helped Jews survive. Obviously, uneducated or vengeful Poles took action against them. But Poles largely aided Jews.

The treaty of versailles created by the united states because the united states made germany pay reparations for the league of nations caused conflicts between countries fought each other so until this day.

I do not agree that Jews and Poles do not get along. On the contrary, even in the bleak years of World War Two, when Germans found Poland a convenient site for implementation of their Holocaust plan, a great number of Poles helped Jews flee from the ghettos and hid them even until the end of the war. And all that, facing imminent death, when discovered by the German invaders. Consider Irena Sendler, for instance - but no famous Hollywood director ever told her story of saving in excess of two thousand Jewish children.
Of course, there were Poles who acted despicably: took money for hiding Jews or even for not telling the Germans that someone else was hiding them. True - but there are rats in every community, and the Polish underground Home Army made all the best they could to eradicate the vermin. So no, it was not during WW2 that something went wrong.
Perhaps some resentment was there during the Stalinist years, when it appeared that most of the oppressive security force consisted of people of Jewish origin “imported” from Russia. But after Stalin’s death the security police was disbanded and the communist regime became a little less oppressive, so the resentment subsided - at least until 1968, when during a conflict within the communist party, a faction consisting of “true Polish nationals” (ironically, led by a man of Ukrainian origin) utilized the dramatic developments of that year to arrange a purge of Jews located on various levels of the party hierarchy, in which many ordinary people suffered, because they were ordered to emigrate to Israel. Still, ordinary people hated to see them suffer - but what could they do?
After the downfall of the communist regime, much effort has been made towards correcting (if possible) that injustice: the decree of forced emigration was withdrawn and the Polish citizenship reinstated to those who accepted. And no, there is nothing sour in Polish-Jewish relations at present: Polish citizens of Jewish ethnic origin have taken top positions in the government (a Deputy Prime Minister, for instance), in the media (the largest Polish daily paper)… well, perhaps not in the Catholic Church (though with one of the bishops I would not be so sure…).
If there is any resentment, it is rather due to incompetent media people, who (for short, they say) name German concentration and death camps in Poland - “Polish concentration camps”. This is something that makes proud Polish people mad.
The jewish people because the jewish people dont know but think that polish people because the jewish people want them to.
